359 the accumulation of T lymphocytes, mononuclear phagocytes, and granulomas in affected tissues.6 Alveolar macrophages (AMs) are the main lung cell population that serves as the first line of cellular defense against pollutants owing to their antigen presenting function and phagocytic properties.7 Granulomas are closed, centrally organized collections of macrophages and epithelial cells surrounded by lymphocytes. Macrophages differentiate into epithelioid cells (after chronic cytokine stimulation), lose some phagocytic capacity, INTRODUCTION Sarcoidosis is a multiorgan granulomatous disease, which most often affects the lungs. It is estimated that from 1 to 40 per 100,000 inhabitants are affected by sarcoidosis.1 The disease is observed all over the world irrespective of the race, sex, and age.2,3 The annual incidence of sarcoidosis in Poland is approximately 10 per 100,000 people.4 The etiology of sarcoidosis is unknown but, in a recent study, Dubaniewicz et al.5 highlighted the possible role of macrophages. Detection of galactomannan in bronchoalveolar lavage of the intensive care unit patients at risk for invasive aspergillosis

Background and Purpose: Invasive aspergillosis (IA) is one of the most common life-threatening fungal infections among the critically ill patients including intensive care unit (ICU) patients. Delayed diagnosis and therapy may lead to poor outcomes. Diagnosis may be facilitated by a test for molecular biomarkers, i.e. detection of galactomannan (GM) antigen based on enzyme immunoassay, which is...

Phenotypic analysis of lymphocytes and monocytes/macrophages in peripheral blood and bronchoalveolar lavage fluid from patients with pulmonary sarcoidosis.

BACKGROUND The granulomatous inflammation in sarcoidosis is driven by the interplay between T cells and macrophages. To gain a better understanding of this process the expression by these cells of cell surface activation markers, co-stimulatory molecules, and adhesion molecules was analysed. METHODS CD4+ and CD8+ T lymphocytes from peripheral blood (PBL) or bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) fluid,...

The Value of LDH Level of BAL Fluid in Differentiating Benign from Malignant Solitary Pulmonary Nodules

Background: Serum lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) concentration is an indicator for tissue injury. It may be secreted locally in many conditions. For the first time, this study was performed to investigate the value of LDH level in bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF) in differentiation of benign from malignant single pulmonary nodules (SPNs) and to assess its relationship with serum LDH levels. Met...

Macrophage polarization in interstitial lung diseases

The role of bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALf) examination in differential diagnosis of interstitial lung diseases (ILD) was established. Currently, functional polarization into M1 (pro-inflammatory) and M2 (anti-inflammatory) subpopulations is emphasized. The aim of our study was to compare the proportion of M1 and M2 in BALf of patients with different ILD. BALf samples were collected from 75...
